On the occasion of International Women’s Day, the Bergamo Granfondo organized a press conference to celebrate the women connected to the event and the strength of women in general.

The arrivals area of Milan Bergamo Airport, main sponsor of the BGY Airport Granfondo, hosted this morning a press conference organized ahead of International Women’s Day – March 8, 2026 – dedicated to highlighting the role and contribution of women in cycling, sport, society, and the workplace.
This event, strongly supported for the second consecutive year by the organizers of the amateur cycling event, together with partners and institutions, aimed to showcase “women-focused” projects and to present the teamwork behind the 2026 edition of the BGY Airport Granfondo, scheduled for May 10 in Bergamo under the auspices of the Italian Cycling Federation.
Several authorities were in attendance, starting with Giovanni Sanga, President of Sacbo S.p.A., along with many institutional representatives: Amelia Corti, General Director of Sacbo S.p.A.; Marcella Messina, Councillor for Social Policies, Sport and Health of the City of Bergamo; Claudia Terzi, Regional Minister for Infrastructure and Public Works of the Lombardy Region; Paolo Franco, Regional Minister for Housing and Social Housing of the Lombardy Region; Lara Magoni, Member of the European Parliament and Provincial CONI Delegate; Lara Parlato, Deputy Prefect of Bergamo; Captain Chiara Evangelista, Commander of the Orio al Serio Company of the Guardia di Finanza; Monica Porta, Commander of the Local Police of the City of Bergamo. Luciana Rota, journalist and sports author, also shared her testimony about the challenges faced by women’s sport.
Since 1996, the year of the event’s first edition, the Bergamo Granfondo has been open to women. BGY Airport Granfondo has always been an event designed with women in mind. During the conference, a special brochure created by the organizing committee was also distributed, dedicated to the “Women of the Granfondo” – all those who work behind the scenes and help make the event possible. The numbers also show that women’s participation in cycling and in the Granfondo is constantly growing.
BGY Airport Granfondo also promotes several initiatives in support of women, including traditional ones such as the red bench displayed during various events, a symbol of awareness and commitment against gender-based violence.
The message that BGY Airport Granfondo wants to convey through this day is that increasing the number of women practicing cycling should not be seen only as a matter of social justice and equal opportunities, but also as an issue of development and national interest that affects many aspects of life.
BGY Airport Granfondo has been pursuing this goal for nearly 30 years and will do so again this year, when the great cycling celebration returns to color the roads of the Bergamo province on Sunday, May 10, 2026.
