Yet, it was enough to ride down the starting straight on Via Marzabotto to understand that the bad weather wouldn’t ruin the party, nor would it take the smiles off the faces of the 1,700 cyclists who participated this morning in the BGY Airport Granfondo, the international cycling event organized by GSM of Giuseppe Manenti that has been brightening the roads of the province of Bergamo since 1996.

Although bad weather forced some athletes not to start the race, many of the 2,500 registered participants pinned their numbers to their backs: among them the 13 loyal athletes who have been gracing the event for 30 years, the hundred women who, on Mother’s Day, treated themselves to a day on the bike; and, last but not least, the foreign athletes, coming not only from European countries like Switzerland, Germany, and France, but also from South and North America, Asia, and Africa, whose arrival in Bergamo was facilitated by BGY Airport, the most bike-friendly airport in Europe, which for the fourth year has been pedaling alongside the organizing machine.

Speaking of the organizational machine, among the irreplaceable supporters are the authorities, the police, the medical staff, the motorcyclists and drivers, and the volunteers who ensured not only the safety of the runners, but also support at the finish line. Hundreds of thermal blankets were distributed to the cyclists at the finish line, and hot drinks were snapped up in the ExpoVillage set up at the Lazzaretto and at the refreshment points located along the three routes.

Those who didn’t have time to enjoy the refreshments were the athletes chasing the top positions. Among them was Alberto Nardin (Mg.K Vis Promotech), who, as in 2025, won the 148km long course.

“The rain made an already demanding course very technical”, said the winner, who also gained the Eugenio Mercorio Award, awarded to the rider with the best time in the Selvino climb. “Compared to last year, the final climb, which was very challenging, was removed. A smart change that would have made the long course more attractive to a greater number of participants”.

Behind the winner were Alex Raimondi (Team BCP Bike) and Stefano Bonomi (Team MP Filtri).

In the middle distance, the first to cross the finish line was Raul Colombo (Team BCP Bike), just one second ahead of Christian Dallago (Team Da-Tor) and Matteo Freddi (Biemme Garda Sport), who finished 5’31” behind. Over the 131km distance, Brazilian-born Tatiana De Souza Melo (Bike&Co) triumphed among the women, being the only female athlete to opt for the 131km route.

“My intention was to run the long route, but since it started raining at the 30th kilometer, I opted for the medium one”, said the winner, who, despite the cold, wanted to enjoy the ceremony to the fullest. “At the crossroads, I saw many athletes opting for the shortcut, but I wanted to continue, despite the cold. In the end, it was an effort that paid off”.

In the short 91km course, the winners were Matteo Bertocchi (Team Morotti Bike), who preceded his teammate Matteo Testa and Davide Prandelli (Garda Scott), and Maria Donzelli (PM Sport), ahead of Teresa Buzzella (Swatt Club) and Manuela Pedrana (Fire & Ice Livigno).

STATEMENTS

Giuseppe Manenti, GMS organizer: “With today’s edition, we’ve surpassed 100,000 registered bikers in 28 editions: an impressive number that makes us proud of what we’ve accomplished so far and gives us the strength to think about the future. We faced a challenging day with challenging weather, but the organization worked flawlessly, and for this I want to thank the volunteers, sponsors, staff, and everyone who made the event a success. It’s disappointing for the athletes, who ran in challenging conditions, but the participation of nearly 2,000 registered runners confirms how this event has become a fixture in the amateur calendar”.

Marcella Messina, Councilor for Sport of the Municipality of Bergamo: “Major events, such as the Giro di Lombardia and stages of the Giro d’Italia, capture the public’s attention, and obviously this also applies to the BGY Airport Granfondo, which has been the granfondo of Bergamo’s citizens since 1996. However, we administrators must have a broader perspective, which also takes into account the promotion of cycling as a means of transportation and infrastructure. From this perspective, the reopening of the Loreto facility, scheduled for inauguration on September 6th, will be important for the Municipality of Bergamo”.

Giovanni Sanga, SACBO president: “This event is a postcard for the entire region. Bergamo will be transformed thanks to infrastructure, which will improve connections to and from Milan and from the center of the city to our airport. All this will be done in the spirit of intermodality: planes, trains, public transport, and even bicycles will be the key players in making the province of Bergamo even more attractive”.

STANDINGS

Long route (148 k)

MEN: 1.
