Over two-thousand starters greeted the debut of the new cycling event inspired by Bergamo’s cycling culture and love, and its bike-friendly airport on Sunday May 14th. Manuel Senni and Maria Elena Palmisano were the overall winners while Tomas Colbrelli, Sonny\u2019s brother, prevailed on the medium distance<\/em><\/p>\n

Bergamo\u00a0<\/strong>has celebrated a new beginning today,\u00a0Sunday, May 14th<\/strong>, the one of its representative Granfondo event shining a light on the reality and cycling love of the\u00a02023 Italian Capital of Culture<\/strong>\u00a0and on its ever-growing\u00a0international airport<\/strong>. At 7:00 o\u2019clock the Mayor of Bergamo\u00a0Giorgio Gori<\/strong>\u00a0and Bergamo’s Province Councillor\u00a0Giorgia Gandossi\u00a0<\/strong>gave the ceremonial start to the story of the\u00a0new BGY Airport Granfondo<\/strong>,<\/strong>\u00a0risen from the partnership with the\u00a0Milan Bergamo Airport<\/strong>,<\/strong>\u00a0new partner and title sponsor of the event.<\/p>\n

With a joyful procession of\u00a0over 2000 riders<\/strong>, the new event has laid excellent foundations to extend a tradition of 25 years, blessed by a mild weather and no rain until the final finisher, in spite of the unpromising weather forecast. Same as in 2022, Italian\u00a0Manuel Senni<\/strong>\u00a0(Team Crainox) took the overall win completing the full\u00a0162,1 km<\/strong>\u00a0distance in 4h33.27, at an average of 35,566 km\/h. French\u00a0Loic Ruffaut<\/strong>,\u00a0<\/strong>from Brian\u00e7on, was again runner-up, at 1.36.\u00a0Federico Pozzecco<\/strong>\u00a0(MGKVis Dal Colle), third at 2.04, rounded out the podium. The women’s race was all about\u00a0Maria Elena Palmisano<\/strong>\u00a0(Garda Scott Matergia), who put on a solo clinic by sweeping away all the opponents.<\/p>\n

One of the stories of the day was the winner on the\u00a0Medium distance<\/strong>\u00a0among men:\u00a0Tomas Colbrelli<\/strong>,\u00a0younger brother of former European Champions and Paris Roubaix winner Sonny Colbrelli<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In the race, Tomas wore\u00a0Sonny\u2019s helmet<\/strong>\u00a0decorated with the European Champion’s jersey stars, as a good luck charm. \u201cI have started riding just two years ago, I used to play football before.<\/em>\u00a0Through cycling, I fully understood how demanding and hard the professional sport is. Sonny would have deserved more, but he achieved great victories anyway\u201d<\/em>, Tomas Colbrelli argued.<\/p>\n

The Women’s race on medium route was won by\u00a0Luisa Isonni\u00a0<\/strong>(Boario).\u00a0Fabio Fadini<\/strong>\u00a0was the fastest man to reach the finish back in Bergamo on the short distance,\u00a0Sonia Opi<\/strong>\u00a0did the same among women.<\/p>\n

All in all, BGY Airport Granfondo certainly delivered a successful first time, a feeling reinforced by the positive feelings and feedbacks on the project by the riders as well as the strategic partner: a milestone of a new path for the strategical development of bike tourism in Bergamo and its province in the near future has been laid.<\/p>\n
