Eugenio Mercorio uphill ITT, in the name of friendship
The 23rd GF Gimondi Bianchi’s uphill ITT will be dedicated to the cycling amateur from Bergamo, untimely passed away, next May 5th, 2019
When the memory of a friend meets the appeal of a demanding climb: the organizers of the GF Internazionale Felice Gimondi Bianchi, to be held in Bergamo (Italy) next May 5th, even this year launch the “Eugenio Mercorio uphill TT challenge” over the 10,4 climb from Nembro to Selvino, with a 621-meter difference in altitude (gradient 5,1%, peak 10%).
“Eugenio was a fan of the cycling and its memorable feats, no matter about the hero with an exception: first and foremost Eugenio admired Gimondi, thinking noboby could equal him” Roberto Perico, Credito Bergamasco-Banco BPM Manager, GF Gimondi Bianchi’s long-time partner explained.
“To brush up the Eugenio Mercorio uphill TTT means to honor a lovely person and a respected professional, always sorrounded by friends: in Bergamo everyone remembers Eugenio. Enthusiastic and charismatic, he was our captain when we used to go riding: he took care about everything, from the courses to the start time, involving a large group of riders. After 40 years without biking, I met him and discovered this great passion“, Perico argued.
Untimely passed away in 2010, Mercorio had taken in several editions of the GF Gimondi Bianchi, together with his friends. “When we trained in view of the Gimondi, the Nembro-Selvino was our academy, as well of the climbs of the Mercorio’s beloved Valle Imagna. We usually chose the short course. Selvino was Eugenio’s climb, our climb“, Perico remembered.
Like in 2018 the timing service powered by TDS will generate three classifications referred to each of competition’s courses: Short, Medium and Long. The classifications shall only include those riders completing the race. The first three riders for each course will be awarded.
